Why sampling is non-negotiable

Ordering samples before bulk production is the single most important step in private label cosmetics sourcing. Here’s why skipping samples is a costly mistake — and why every professional brand founder samples first.

💰 Protects your investment

Bulk orders range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. A sample costing $20–$100 lets you verify the product before committing to a bulk order. The cost of a bad bulk order far exceeds the cost of sampling.

🎨 Verifies shade accuracy

Shade names and descriptions can be misleading. The only way to know if a shade is right for your brand and target customer is to see and test it in person. What looks right on screen may be very different in reality.

🧪 Confirms formula quality

Texture, consistency, pigmentation, wear time, and skin feel cannot be assessed from a product listing. Sampling lets you test the formula against your quality standards and your target customer’s expectations.

📦 Checks packaging quality

Packaging quality — the feel of the tube, the click of the cap, the smoothness of the applicator — directly affects your brand perception. Sampling lets you assess packaging quality before it reaches your customers.

🏷️ Verifies logo print quality

Logo printing quality varies by method, substrate, and manufacturer. Sampling with your logo lets you verify print quality, colour accuracy, and alignment before committing to branded bulk production.

🔄 Enables adjustments

If the sample isn’t quite right — shade too dark, texture too thick, packaging not ideal — you can request adjustments before bulk. This is only possible if you sample first. Adjustments after bulk production are costly or impossible.

💡 MetaCNBeauty policy: We always recommend sampling before bulk. Sample fees are credited back in full against your first qualifying bulk order — so sampling is effectively free when you proceed to bulk.

Section 2

How to order samples from MetaCNBeauty

Our sample process is straightforward. Here’s exactly how it works, step by step.

📸 Step 1 — Select your products

Browse our product catalog on the website or request our full PDF catalog via WhatsApp. Select the products you want to sample. You can also describe your ideal product and we’ll recommend the best-fit SKU.

  • Send us a screenshot of any product from our website
  • Tell us the shade, quantity, and any preferences
  • Or describe your product brief and we’ll match you
  • You can also order samples directly on our website

📜 Step 2 — Receive & confirm Proforma Invoice

We issue a Proforma Invoice (PI) for your sample order. Review the PI carefully to confirm product details, quantity, unit price, shipping cost, and total amount. Once everything is correct, confirm and make payment.

  • PI includes: product name, shade, quantity, unit price, shipping
  • Payment via T/T bank transfer or agreed method
  • Sample fees credited back against first bulk order
  • Confirm your delivery address, name, phone, and postal code

🚚 Step 3 — Sample dispatch

We dispatch your samples via express courier (DHL, FedEx, or UPS) from our Guangzhou factory. You’ll receive a tracking number as soon as the shipment is booked.

  • Regular samples (no logo): dispatched in 3–5 business days
  • Custom logo samples: dispatched in 7–15 business days
  • Delivery to most destinations: 3–8 business days after dispatch
  • INCI list and MSDS included with every sample shipment

🧪 Step 4 — Test & evaluate

Receive your samples and evaluate them thoroughly using the checklist in Section 4 of this guide. Take your time — especially for stability testing, which requires 2–4 weeks at room temperature.

  • Test formula, shade, packaging, and logo print
  • Test on your target skin tone if possible
  • Leave samples at room temperature for 2–4 weeks for stability
  • Document your findings using the evaluation checklist below
Sample type What’s included Dispatch time Best for
Regular sample Standard product, no logo, standard packaging 3–5 business days Formula and shade evaluation before committing to branding
Custom logo sample Your logo printed on product and/or packaging 7–15 business days Full brand evaluation including logo print quality and placement
Custom packaging sample Custom primary or secondary packaging with your design 15–25 business days Tier B (10,000 PCS+) orders with full packaging customization

Section 3

How to evaluate cosmetics samples

A thorough sample evaluation covers six key areas. Here’s what to assess for each, with specific criteria by product category.

🎨 1. Shade & colour accuracy

Compare the shade to your reference (Pantone, competitor product, or mood board image). Assess in natural daylight, not just artificial light.

  • Does the shade match your reference or expectation?
  • Is the pigmentation level appropriate for the product type?
  • Does the shade oxidise or change colour after application?
  • For lip products: does the shade look the same in the bullet vs. on lips?
  • For foundation: does the shade match your target skin tone range?
  • For eyeshadow: is the colour payoff consistent across the pan?

🧪 2. Formula texture & consistency

Assess the formula’s texture, consistency, and skin feel. Compare to your product brief or reference product.

  • Is the texture as described (creamy, lightweight, glossy, matte)?
  • Does it apply smoothly without dragging or pilling?
  • Is the consistency uniform throughout the product?
  • For lip gloss: is the viscosity right — not too thick, not too runny?
  • For mascara: does it coat lashes without clumping?
  • For foundation: does it blend easily and cover evenly?
  • For serum: does it absorb quickly without residue?

⏱️ 3. Wear time & performance

Test the product under real-world conditions — not just at application. Wear time is one of the most important performance metrics for makeup products.

  • How long does the product last without fading, creasing, or transferring?
  • For lip products: does it survive eating and drinking?
  • For mascara: does it smudge or flake during the day?
  • For foundation: does it oxidise or separate after 4–8 hours?
  • For eyeliner: does it smudge or fade within hours?
  • For skincare: does it absorb fully and leave skin comfortable?

📦 4. Packaging quality

Packaging quality directly affects your brand perception. Assess every physical element of the packaging.

  • Does the cap click securely and feel premium?
  • Is the tube or bottle free from defects, scratches, or uneven finish?
  • Does the applicator (wand, brush, doe foot) work correctly?
  • Is the packaging the right weight and feel for your brand positioning?
  • Does the packaging seal properly to prevent leakage?
  • Is the outer box (if applicable) clean, square, and well-printed?

🏷️ 5. Logo print quality

For custom logo samples, evaluate the print quality carefully. This is what your customers will see and touch.

  • Is the logo sharp and clear — no blurring or pixelation?
  • Is the colour accurate to your brand colour (Pantone reference)?
  • Is the logo centred and aligned correctly on the product?
  • Is the print durable — does it scratch or rub off easily?
  • Is the print method appropriate for your brand aesthetic (screen print, foil, emboss)?

📅 6. Stability testing

Stability testing is the most overlooked step in sample evaluation — and one of the most important. Leave samples at room temperature for 2–4 weeks and re-evaluate.

  • Does the formula separate, change colour, or develop an off-smell?
  • Does the texture change (thicken, thin, or become grainy)?
  • For lip gloss: does it crystallise or become cloudy?
  • For mascara: does it dry out or clump in the tube?
  • For skincare: does it separate or change consistency?
  • Does the packaging remain sealed and leak-free over time?

Evaluation by product category

Key things to focus on when evaluating specific product types.

Product Key evaluation points Common issues to watch for
Lip Gloss Viscosity, shine level, stickiness, shade accuracy, doe foot applicator quality Too sticky, shade oxidises, applicator picks up too much product
Lipstick Bullet texture, shade payoff, wear time, transfer resistance, scent Bullet too soft (breaks), shade too sheer, heavy fragrance
Mascara Brush shape, formula consistency, lengthening/volumising effect, smudge resistance Clumping, flaking after 4 hours, brush deposits too much product
Eyeliner Tip precision, formula flow, drying time, smudge resistance, wear time Tip too thick, formula skips, smudges within 2 hours
Foundation Shade match, coverage level, blendability, finish (matte/dewy), oxidation after 4h Shade oxidises darker, patchy application, separates after 6 hours
Eyeshadow Colour payoff, blendability, fallout, pan texture, shade accuracy Poor pigmentation, excessive fallout, chalky texture
Skincare Serum Texture, absorption speed, skin feel after 30 min, scent, stability Sticky residue, slow absorption, formula separates after 2 weeks
Lip Balm Texture, moisturising effect, scent, bullet hardness, wear time Too waxy, heavy fragrance, bullet too soft in warm conditions

How to give effective feedback

Good feedback leads to better adjustments and faster approval. Here’s how to communicate your sample feedback clearly and effectively.

📸 Be specific with visuals

Send photos and videos of the issue. A photo of the shade in natural daylight, a video of the texture being applied, or a close-up of a packaging defect communicates far more than a text description alone.

🎨 Use reference points

Instead of “the shade is too dark”, say “the shade is approximately 2 shades darker than Pantone 17-1511 — please lighten”. Reference colours, competitor products, or mood board images give our team a precise target to adjust to.

📝 Separate must-fix from nice-to-have

Clearly distinguish between issues that are deal-breakers (must be fixed before bulk) and minor preferences (nice to have but not essential). This helps our team prioritise and respond efficiently.

✅ Confirm what you like

Tell us what you’re happy with, not just what needs changing. “The texture is perfect, the packaging quality is great — only the shade needs adjustment” is much more useful than a list of problems only.

💬 Use WhatsApp for fast feedback

Send your feedback via WhatsApp for the fastest response. You can send photos, videos, and voice notes directly. Our team responds in English and will confirm receipt and next steps within 1–2 business days.

🔄 Allow time for re-sampling

If adjustments are needed, a revised sample will be prepared and dispatched. Factor in additional time for re-sampling (3–15 days dispatch + delivery) when planning your launch timeline.
